Shut Down Remote Computer - Windows XP

I already have a post on "Remote Shutdown in Windows NT".But the things are little different in XP. Windows XP comes with the component "SHUTDOWN.exe" that would help us in making the task successful.

* Click Start ==> Run ==> Type "cmd"

* Enter the commands below:

SHUTDOWN -r -m \\computer name -- Restarts the remote computer with the specified computer name

SHUTDOWN -s -m \\computer name -- Shuts down the remote computer

There are other options available for -r and -s....

-i -- Help on the command

-l -- Displays GUI

-a -- Aborts the system shutdown

You can also spencify the time after which the operation should occur

SHUTDOWN -r -f -m \\computer name -t xx -- Shuts down the computer after xx seconds.

Where -f -- Forces running applications to close.

Google Docs - Offline Mode

Wouldn't it be great to access all your documents offline. Google uses Gears, an open source component, to provide the users the offline mode of the Google Docs.

Here is how you do it....

* Register with "http://docs.google.com"

* In the header, click the 'Offline' link ==> 'Download Gears' in the dialog box.

* Click 'Install Gears' ==> Save the "Gears.exe" file.

* Double-click the file and start the setup.

* Browse the site "http://gears.google.com" and check if the component has been successfully installed.

* Log into the Google account and click the 'Offline Link' ==> 'Activate Offline Access'

* Activate the 'I trust the site' option in the security note for external access to your computer with Gears.

* Now you can select the direct links that you want to create.

* You can browse the files through the link created to Google Text or browse 'http://docs.google.com'

Once connected to the internet, the documents are automtically synchronized.

Advanced Error Search

Did you know that, with a simple log file, you can have a clear information about all the actions and the user profiles, during a crash or any error??

Windows XP and Vista provides you with such enhanced features!!

* Click Start ==> Run ==> Type "Regedit"

* Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\ CurrentVersion\Winlogon"

* Right click in the right-pane and click New ==> DWord Value

* Name it as "UserEventDebugLevel"

* Double click and enter any of the Hex-Values below:

- 10001 ==> Log file with default output
- 10002 ==> Log file with extended output
- 20001 ==> Debugging file with default output
- 20002 ==> Debugging fiel with extended output

* Restart the machine and the desired information is found in the "userenv.log" in the 'Debug\User Mode' directory in the Windows folder

To stop creating the logs, either delete the entries or change the value to "0"

Hide Users from Login Screen in XP

Windows displays the list of users by default in the login screen. But want to give it a new look!!! Follow these tweaks....

* Click Start ==> Run ==> Type "Regedit"

* Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\ CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList"

* Right-click on the right pane and click "New" ==> "DWord Value"

* Create the DWord with the exact name of the user you want to hide and assign a Decimal value of 0/1.

0 - To hide the user
1 - To show the user

* Click "OK"

Now Restart the system!!

* To logon with the account of hidden user, Press "CTRL+ALT+DEL" twice and you are displayed with the classic style of XP logon where you can enter both the username and the password of the user.

Restore "Show Desktop" Icon

"Show Desktop" icon is very handy and useful while you are working with many of the windows. And there might be cases where we might have accidentally deleted the icon. Then here is the way to restore it back in no time.

* Change the Folder options so that the hidden folders are shown.

* Navigate to "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch".

Where User - username of the desktop user.

Note: The folder "Application Data" is Hidden.

Now you can see the icon show dessktop. Create a copy and place it in the taskbar.

OR

You can even alternatively try this method -

* Open Notepad and type in the following piece:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

* Save the file as "Show Desktop.scf" (without quotes)

* Now you have the shortcut. Just drag the icon to the task bar.

Windows NT comes with a Resource kit with the files SHUTCMD.exe.

This can be used in a variety of ways to play with your enemies computer. Just download and install the resource kit in the "Service Pack 6a".

Follow the below commands to start off:

* SHUTCMD \L -- Shuts down the local computer

* SHUTCMD \\Computer Name /Y -- Shuts down the remote computer specified their IP address

Bored of the same old C, D, E, F drive letters? Here is a simple way to change the drive alphabets.

* Right-Click on "My Computer" ==> "Manage"

* In the "Computer Management" screen click on "Disk Management"

* Now Right-click the drive you want to change and select "Change Drive Letters and Paths.."

* Click on "Change" ==> Select from the list of alphabets in the drop down

* Click "OK"

Now check your "My Computer"........;)

" Passwords in Windows XP "

When a site prompts for "Remember Password", where are all the passwords and login information stored??

This is a question for which, many of you might be searching an answer. Well, then here goes a simple information that might give you a start!!

On checking the option, all the information are stored in the form on SAM files. The files are defaulted to the directory:

C:\Windows\system32\config

Though the files look like simple notepads, the information cannot be viewed by any of the editors. They contain hash codes and have no decryption algorithms.

But!!!!, Every problem has a solution.

These files can be viewed in LINUX. But in Windows, these files can neither be modified nor can be moved to a different location.

The emerging technologies have a solution too....The tool "PWDUMP" can decode these hashes. If you have lost your password, then this can be an easy way to get back the track.

These passwords can be deleted or disabled. For more information, check my tutorial on "Auto Complete Passwords"

Access Folders From Taskbar

Tired browsing to the Windows Explorer to find your files?? Then try this simple trick that can add your explorer to the task bar.

* Right-click on the taskbar on the space between Start Menu and the Tray

* Click "Toolbars" ==> "New Toolbar"

A New Window opens with a list of folders

* Select the desired location and click "OK"

* The task bar now displays an icon for the access of your selected destination, just with a click.

Wasn't that Cool and Simple!!

"Auto Complete Passwords"

Hi Techies!!
Remember the Windows "Password Remember" prompt, each time you login to a new website?? Here's some freaking information about the magic box.

For some sites, we don't require the auto login , and so might choose "No" in the dialog box. This may end with the dialog box not being displayed ever. So just follow the steps below if you want the prompt back.

* Enter the site and double click the login field

* This displays a list of usernames that are Auto saved.

* Highlight the Username and click "Delete".

Now try logging in and you are again with the same dialog box.

This can also be acheived with a simple registry setting, if the above isn't working for you....

* Start ==> Run ==> Enter "Regedit"

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms\SPW

* You can see a list of encrypted passwords.

* Now select the SPW key and click "Delete".

Every password that you enter is saved with a unique SPW key, whether you select "YES" or "NO".

But the Auto complete data is saved in a different storage:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider

Each of the passwords can be decrypted with various tools available.

Delete "Recent Documents" History

Any document that you open in Windows is added to the Recent Documents list. Now with this simple trick you can stop that!!!

* Start ==> Run ==> Type "Regedit"

* [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

* Right Click on the right Pane and create a new DWORD value.

* Assign Value Name as "NoRecentDocsHistory"

* Data Type as "REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)"

* If Value Data = 0 : disable restriction
1 : enable restriction

Find IP address from Mail ID

Hello Freinds, I am back with some more cool tricks this time that can save you from various security threats.

Now i am gonna just tell you, how easy it is to find the IP address of the person who has sent a mail in Yahoo.

(The information is meant only for security use and any misuse can be liable to punishment)

* Login to your account and Open the mail.

* On the right-top corner, click Options ==> Select "Standard Headers".

* There you are with all the ip addresses of the person who sent you the mail.

Check the ip address aside to the from:

But the mail sometimes may not come directly from his/her pc. Inorder to deviate the user the mail is passed through many gateways and then finally sent. And to trace out the IP address in such a case find the last "From :" and check the IP there.

Find Who Hacked You

To find or trace the IP address of the person who has hacked you just follow these simple steps :

* Start ==> Run ==> Type "cmd" (or) "command".

* Type "netstat –a"

Now you have a list of IP addresses and the Domain names

The local address indicates your IP address and the foreign address indicates the ip address of the person who hacked you.

For more detailed or clear look

* Start ==> Run ==> "netstat –an".

This give the Ip addresses at local address.

Define a Reply Address in the OUTLOOK

Outlook offers many features and most of them are hidden from many of the users....
Do you know that Outlook offers features to define the reply address to a mail sent from any mail address. This might be helpful when you are sending a mail from your company server but want to get the reply directed to a different address.....

OUTLOOK XP, 2003:

* Write the new message and before sending it, click "View" ==> "Options"

* Activate the checkbox "Have replies sent to" under "Delivery options" section.

* Enter the mailing address in the field or can alternatively select from the Contacts list by clicking "Select names".

OUTLOOK 2007:

* While composing the message, in the "Options" tab on the ribbon, click on the "Direct replies to" button.

* Check the box "Have replies sent to" in the "Delivery Options" section and enter the desired address.

* And to select the address from the Contacts list, click the "Select names" button.

* "Close" the dialog and send the message.

Delete Windows Messenger

Windows messenger loads by default with the MS Windows. And it is not even displayed in the list of installed softwares. This is because the corresponding entry is hidden. But if the chat box is annoying and you never use it, the messenger can be shut....

* Navigate to "C:\\Windows\Inf\"

* Open the file "sysoc.inf" file in the notepad

* Search for the following line in the text file:

msmsgs-msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

* Delete "hide". And make sure u don’t delete the comma with it.

* Save the file.

* Click "Start ==> Control Panel ==> Software" and select "Add/remove Windows components".

* The list now shows an entry for Windows Messenger, which u can now uninstall.

Wide screen monitors have lots of space. Then why not design and customize it with your convenience. How about the idea of embedding a website on to your desktop? This can be easily done with Windows XP. Just follow these steps......

* Open your favorite webiste in IE.

* Now find the RSS feeds and click on the arrow beside "Display feeds from this website" and select the desired entry in the toolbar.

* Copy the URL of the site in address bar to clipboard .

* Now Right-click on free space on the desktop ==> Properties ==> 'Desktop' tab ==> "Customize Desktop"

* Click on "Web" tab ==> "New"

* Paste the URL in the 'Location' field ==> "OK"

* Now the item added is displayed in the Webpages listbox.

* Make sure the checkbox next to the URL is checked adn click "OK".

* Now you can see that an area of the desktop is running live with the News.

You can move it on the desktop to your desired location and can even scale the window.

To remove the webiste.....

* Right-click on the Desktop ==> Properties ==> 'Desktop' tab ==> "Customize desktop"

* Uncheck the checkbox of the webiste you wish not to display.

* Alternatively, you can even remove the item completely from the list by selecting the item and click "Delete" button on the right.

Auto Numbering In Word 2007

MicroSoft Word provides the best features to format the text in no time. One of such features is the auto numbering format to the paragraphs. But this soemtimes can be annoying if you dont want to auto number the lines of text.

So, here is how you can control it Word 2003 & 2007.....

* Click Tools ==> AutoCorrect ==> "AutoFormat As You Type" tab

* Under "Apply As you Type" section, uncheck "Automatic Numbered Lists"

For Word 2007:

* Click "Office" button ==> "Word Options" button

* Select "Proofing" from the diaog box

* Click "Auto Correct Options" button ==> "AutoFormat As You Type" tab

* In the "Apply As You Type" section, uncheck the "Automatic numbered list" box.

* Click "OK" to save the changes.

Easy Download With Firefox

Firefox is secure of the browsers available around. And when it comes to downloading, Firefox displays a dialog box on the progress of the download whether it be one or many. But this requires the browser to open a new window and hence utilizes more resources. But it is often in a minimized state. A new Add-on "Download Statusbar" is the solution....

This displays the progress in the stauts bar and hence doesn't require to open a new window.

Download the utility from "https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/26"
Click on "Add to Firefox"

It also provides options to configure the status bar like the style and colors.

* Click Tools ==> Add-ons ==> Options

* Under "General" tab, you have two modes - Full mode and Mini Mode.

* "Mini Mode" displays just the number of files being downloaded while "Full Mode" displays the complete name of the files.

* "Progress Notifications" section displays the notifications. And the highlight of all is that the files are cleared from the status bar once the download is done.

* Click "Appearance" tab ==> "Custome Style" radio button

Now you can select from the range of colors to design the status bar according to your style. You can even adjust the font sizes and width, height of the bar.

* Finally click "Apply" for the immediate effect of the changes and Click "OK" to fianlize.

Toolbar in IE, is the easy access to the wide features provided. But it is even dumped with unused icons. But now you can design your own toolbar with few simple commands.

So here you go for a complete new look.....

* Click Start ==> Run

* Enter "Regedit"

* Browse 'HKEY_CURRENT_USERS' ==> Software ==> Microsoft ==> Windows ==> CurrentVersion ==> Policies ==> Explorer

* Righk click in the right-pane and select "New" ==> DWORD value
* Name it as " SpecifyDefaultIcons" and enter the value as "1".

Now begins the adventure....

* For individual icons, create the DWORD values provided below and then double-click on each and assign a value of "2"

Btn_Back ==> Hide Back

Btn_Forward ==> HIde Forward

Btn_Stop ==> Hide Stop

Btn_Search ==> Hide Search

Btn_Refresh ==> Hide Refresh

Btn_Home ==> Hide Home

Btn_History ==> Hide History

Btn_Favorites ==> Hide Favorites

Increase Size Of Command Prompt

The command prompt window shows only a text of 25 lines at a time and can be fuzzy sometimes. Now play around with the size and view the text in a complete drag with these simple changes.

* Start ==> Run ==> Enter 'cmd'

* Right-click on the upper left corner of the window and select 'Properties'.

* Click on the "Layout" tab and edit the 'Height' value under 'Window Size' - say 50.

* Also change the "Height" under 'Screen Buffer Size' to 500. This is the number of lines the command prompt notes.

* Click 'OK' to confirm the settings and close the dialog box.

* Type 'Exit' in the command prompt and the changes will affect the next time you open Command Prompt.

Every time you open "My Computer", it takes you to double click the folder to dig to the content. Now with simple registry hacking, you can open "My Computer" in the Explorer view.

* Start ==> Run ==> 'Regedit'

* Navigate to 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell' key.

* Double-click on '(Default)' in the right pane and in the "Edit String" dialog box, in the "Value data" field, enter 'explore'.

* Click 'OK'.

Just use this simple trick to turn a simple notepad into diary with auto added dates and just hide it.

* Now type ".LOG" (without quotes) and save it.

* Close it and try opening it again.

* The day's date is auto added.......

Create A Table in MSWord with just ( + ) and ( - )

Wondering how just a + and - symbols would end up in a complete table of desired number of rows and columns of required width !!!

Just follow the steps...

* Start the row with plus (+) sign.

* Now type a string of minus (-) sign following the plus (+) sign till the required column width.

* End the row with a plus sign again.

* If you want to add another column then again a series of minus (-) sign and a plus (+) again.

* Now press <Enter>.

Wasn't that simple and cool......

Improve Performance of Website (Part-2)

Hey!! i'm back with the second part of the series.....

Let's start!!

* The JavaScript and CSS files are cached by the browser. So, using them as external files generally produces faster pages.Js and CSS that are inlined in HTML docs get downloaded everytime the HTMl doc is requested. This reduces the number of HTTP requests, but increases the size of the HTMl doc. but using JS and CSS in external files reduces the size of the HTML doc without increasing the number of HTTP requests.

Inlining is preferable only with the home pages which have only one page view per session. Inlining in this case results in faster end-user response time.

* The other method is Flush the buffer. When user requests a page ,it takes arount 200 - 500ms for the backend server to stitch together the entire HTML page. And during this time the browser is idle.Some languages rpovide functions to flush the buffer. For Eg. In php we have flush(). It allows you to send partially ready HTML response to the browser, so that the browser can start fetching components while your backend is busy with the rest of the page.

A good practice is to place the flushing right after the HEAD coz it is easier to produceand it also allows you to include any CSS and JS files for the browser to start fetching in parallel while backend is procesing.

Ever tried a mix and match of CTRL/SHIFT with mouse scroll ??

Just try !!!

Isn't tat worth saying ......WOW!!!!

A mix of CTRL + Mouse scroll, either increases or decreases the font size, based on your direction of scroll...This is a simple trick which helps in easy reading for many.

And with SHIFT, it just works like a BACK or FORWARD buttons, based on your scroll...

Here i'm back with a complete series of tips and tricks to help you speed up your website with just a few changes.

The first important thing to be considered to speed up any website is it's response time. Most of the end-user's response time is tied up with the downloading components of the site like Flash, CSS, images, scripts etc. And concentrating on this we can reduce the number of HTTP requests. But without these will the site have that RICHER LOOK ?? So here are few ways to speed up your site without compromising the design...

Combined files reduce the number of HTTP requests by combining all scripts into a single script and similarly combining all CSS into a single stylesheet. But it can be more challenging , when the scripts and stylesheets vary from page to page.

Just combine the background images to a single image and use the CSS properties to diplay it. Image maps combine the images... but it works only when the images are contiguous in the page, such as navigation bar. Using image maps for navigation isn't accessible too. So, it's not recommended.

Inline images are the next factor that increases the size of your HTMl doc. So combine images into your(cached) stylesheets. This reduces the HTTP requests and above all inline images aren't supported by all browsers. So, y go for them??

Most of the site visitors come with an empty cache. So, now it's ur role to make a better user experience.

Protect Your PC And Pen Drive From Virus

Many of our PC's or laptop's normally get attacked by viruses coz of pendrives or other USB devices.

And my PC .........it never runs more than 2 months!!! ;)

Some Virus like Ravmon Virus , Heap41a worm which are not detected by anti virus normally spreads mostly by the Pen Drives .

You can protect your PC from them by just following the simple steps below :

* Connect your Pen Drive or USB drive to your PC

* This pop's up a dialogue window prompting to choose among the options.
Just don't choose any of them and click Cancel

* Now go to Start–> Run ==> cmd

* Go to My Computer ==> Check the Drive letter of your USB drive
(E.g. if it is written Kingston (H :), then H: will be the drive letter)

* In the Command Prompt ==> Type the drive letter: ==> Enter

* Type dir/w/o/a/p ==> Enter

* You will get a list of files. In the list , search if anyone of the following
exists :

Autorun.inf

New Folder.exe

Bha.vbs

Iexplore.vbs

Info.exe

New_Folder.exe

Ravmon.exe

RVHost.exe or any other files with .exe Extension . *

If you find any one of the files above ---

* Run the command attrib -h -r -s -a *.* ==> Enter.

* Delete each File using the following Command :

del filename ( E.g del autorun.inf )

It's all done!!!!

Now just scan your USB drive with the Anti-virus to ensure that your Pen Drive
free of Virus.

Create Submenu's For Various Start Menu Items

We can access MyComputer, MyDocuments etc from Start menu but need to browse for the exact drive or folder. What if we had the same drives and folders as submenu's in Start Menu itself??

Isn't that interesting........??
So just go on...!!

* Right-Click Start menu ==> Properties

* Select 'Startmenu' tab ==> Customize

* Now scroll down to the menuitem for which you wish to have a submenu and select
the radio button 'Display as a menu'

* Click OK ==> Apply ==>OK

Now you can apply to any items listed in the Start menu..

Remove From The List Of 'Open With'

It's easy to add a program to the list of applications in the 'Open With...' menu.Just right click and select 'Open With...' and choose from the list of available programs.But how easy is it to delete a program form the list.This requires modification of the Registry.

* Initially Backup registry

* Click Start ==> Run ==> Regedit

* Select HKEY_CURRENT_USER\
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
FileExts

If necessary also go through the submenus (Click '+' beside the key representing the extension for menu you want to edit.

* Open-With List key under extension key

* In right pane, select icon that corresponds to menu item you would like
to remove from the context menu ==> Right Click ==> Delete

Create Many Folders At A Time

Creating several folders at once -- including the subfolders within those new folders require just a very simple 3-line batch file....

* Open Notepad ==> Type @echo off in the first line ==> Press
<Enter>

* Now type in the second line set /p name="Type folder name(s):"

* Press <Enter>

* In the third line type md %1\%name% ==> Press
<Enter>

This third line creates a new folder using 'md' or 'make directory'
command in the current folder(%1\) using items that you have entered and stored
inside the variable (%name%)

* Click File ==> Save ==> Navigate to the folder where you store your
batch files , type a name like make_directory.cmd ==> Save it

Now to add the batch file to the right click menus for folders....

* Open a folder or <Windows>-E

* Tools ==> Folder Options ==> File Types

* Scroll through the list of 'Registered File Types' and select 'File
Folder'

* Click 'Advanced' to open 'Edit file type' dialog box and click
'New' Button

For 'Application' used to perform action, type the complete file path and the name of your batch file followed by a space and "%1"

Eg: d:\apps\batch\make_directory.cmd "%1"

* Click Ok ==> Ok

In case you make a mistake while entering text in the new Action dialog box, you have to use Registry editor to fix it.

With the registry backed up ,

* Click Start ==> Run ==> Regedit ==> <r%gt;

* Select HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Shell

* Select folder with the name of the command you just added

* Double click the icon in the right pane to open the command line in the
'Edit String' dialog box and make changes

To delete the custom command altogether, close the dialog box,

* Right click the folder in the left pane ==> Delete

* Click 'Yes'

Create Folders with Current Date

Storing digital photos, Email's, Chat is great with Date-based folders.You can customize menus in Windows Xp to create a folder named with current date, with just two mouse clicks.........

Choose a valid date format , for eg. 19/09/08 is verbotten as windows doesn't allow slashes in the file and foder names.

Folow the steps below to create chronological folders:

* Click Start ==> Run ==> Enter 'control intl.cpl' ==> Press
<Enter>

* Select 'Regional options' tab ==> Customize

* Select 'Date' tab ==> choose 'yyyy-MM-dd' format from
the drop-down menu

* Click OK

Now we can add a command to create a folder with this date format.

* Press <Windows>-E which pops up Windows Explorer

* Selct Tools ==> Folder Options ==> File Types ==> Select
Registered File Types List

* Scroll to and select 'File Folder'

* Click 'Advanced' to open 'Edit File Type' dialog box

* Click 'New'

For 'Action' Type the words which you would wish to see in the context menu for the command.I named it as 'New Folder With Current Date'

For 'Application' used to perform action, type cmd.exe/e md "%1\%%DATE%%"

Click OK twice.

Now you have your folders all in Chronological order....

Design Your Own Toolbar

Bored of IE's drag Toolbar??

Add any bitmap image as the background.If the file is small,IE will tile it for you.Don't go smaller than 10 by 10 pixels)

* Click Start ==> Run ==> Regedit

* Select HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar in the left pane

* Right click in the right pane, Select New ==> String Value ==> Type BackBitmapIE5

* Double Click this new key

* In the 'value data' box, enter the path of .bmp file you want to use and press <Enter>

* Exit the Registry and close IE

Now the next time you open IE you can see the custom image as the toolbar background.

Launch IE Your Way

* Click Start ==> Run

* Type iexplore -e --> This launches the IE with a Windows Explorer pane on the left and IE on the right

* Type iexplore -k --> This launches IE in full-screen kiosk mode ( no toolbars, addressbars..). To close the window press <Alt><F4>

* Type iexplore -nohome --> IE displays a blank page

We can also combine switches with URL's

* Type iexplore -k www.google.com

Print Without Graphics

When you print a Web page with IE, you probably are interested in just the text and not the graphics or the Ads.And if a Website has printer-friendly link , you are done!!

But what if it doesn't....??

Tell your IE to print your page, minus images.

* Open Notepad and type:

IMG{display:none!important;}
Download: NoImages.css[right-click and select: Save Target as]

* Save as 'Imageoff.css'

When you are ready to print...

* Select Tools ==> Internet options ==> 'Accessibility' button

* Check 'Format Documnts using my style sheet' box

* Click Browse, navigate and select 'Imageoff.css' file and click Ok

* Click Ok

IE will stop displaying most of the images. After printing, if you want your IE to display images again, Uncheck the 'Format documents' box.

Sometimes i feel that Microsoft internally configures Word to run slowly.Want to speed up MSWord and improve performance??

Just a few tricks that help u..........

* Click Tools ==> Options

* Click 'View' tab ==> Uncheck the 'Animated textbox'

* If you use word in Normal view, check 'wrap to window'

* Click 'General' tab ==> uncheck 'Provide feedback with animation'

* If you work with many documents, bump the 'Recently used file list' entries to 9 (highest setting)

* If you use simple Autoshapes , Uncheck 'Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting Auto Shapes'

* Click 'Spelling and Grammar' tab ==> uncheck 'Check Grammar as you type' and 'Check Grammar with Spelling'

Really need speed.......

* Turn off the on-the-fly spelling checker, by unselecting 'Check Spelling as you type'

* Click 'Print' tab ==> Turn off 'Background printing'

Use Word As A Calculator

Word had a calculate function on Tools Menu.Select numbers anywhere in the text and with a click, word could add,divide and more. Press , and the result was pasted into your documnt.Word colud even resolve the expressions like (5*6)+(2/9). This feature still remains as part of the word but is hidden.

Wanna resurface that.....???

* Select Tools ==> Customize ==>Choose 'Command' tab

* Then 'Tools' in the categories panel on the left

* Over in the right panel, locate 'Tools Calculate' , grab it, and drag it over to a Word toolbar

* To use the feature, highlight numbers in your document and click 'Tools Calculate' button on you toolbar.

Change the Default Desktop icons

Just follow these steps:

* Start ==> Run.. ==> Type Regedit ==> OK.

* Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ explorer \ Shell Icons .

The default icons number starts from 0 and till 40.

* Double click on the number of the particular icon you want to change. See the chart below.

* Enter the name of the icon file you want to use followed by the number of the icon in that file.

So,If you use a single .ICO file, it should be followed by a 0.

e.g. - filename.dll,3- This would actually be the 2nd icon since it starts with 0.

* Make sure you delete the hidden file C:\WINDOWS\SHELLICONCACHE

Cool Keyboard Shortcuts

here are some cool keyboard shortcuts that might help u for speedy work up!!!

Ctrl-A = Select all
Ctrl-B = Bold text
Ctrl-C = copy
Ctrl-D = In Excel, this means Copy Down; you will copy whatever is in a cell to just below it
Ctrl-F = find
Ctrl-G = in Excel, this means Go to; you can go to a particular destination cell
Ctrl-H = find and replace
Ctrl-I = italic text
Ctrl-K = In Excel, this means insert Hyperlink
Ctrl-L = In Excel, this means make list
Ctrl-N = Opens you a new file or page
Ctrl-O = open
Ctrl-P = print
Ctrl-R = In Excel, this means Copy Right; you will copy whatever is in a cell to just to the right it
Ctrl-S = save
Ctrl-U = underlined text
Ctrl-V = paste
Ctrl-W = close the current page (can't recall if this closes all of the open files in a particular application)
Ctrl-X = cut
Ctrl-Z = undo

Start-d = Minimises all current open windows.

Start-i = Opens new internet explorer window.

Start-r = Run..

Speed up start menu

If you are still working with old or slow computer don't worry, you can speed it up ith some changes in windows registry. The default speed of start menu is slow. After these changes your computer start menu will respond like a latest computer.

* Click Start button ==> Run ==> Regedit ==> OK.

* In Registry Editor panel go to the path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelay

* By default the value "MenuShowDelay=400", but you can set value between 0 to 400. Now put the value "MenuShowDelay"=0 to speed up.

* Now close the registry editor and restart your computer for the changes to go into effect.

Hide desktop icons

You can hide the Desktop Icons in Windows 2000 and Windows XP using windows registry editor. This tip is very useful, if you want to safe your personal data and icons of the windows desktop on a single computer.

Follow the given steps to to hide Desktop Icons:

* Click Start button then type regedit in Run option then press Enter for next.

* Here locate the location to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

* Here in right side panel, right click to create a new DWORD value with name NoDesktop and type REG_DWORD then change its value data 1.

* Now close the registry editor and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

Don't know how to get a screenshot???? Then u r at a right place!!

Just follow the steps:

* Hold Ctrl and Press "PrtScnSysRq" on top right of ur keyboard.

* Now open a new file in paint(start-> Allprograms -> Accessories -> Paint).

* Now press "Ctrl+v" and u can have the image on ur file.

* Save it in Jpeg format for better image quality.

Add items to "Start" using registry

Always export or backup the whole windows registry keys on backup drive before editing them Because any mistake in Registry can cause serious problem in your computer to run properly.

Follow the given steps to change the Start button setting.

* Click Start ==> Run ==> Type Regedit ==> OK.

* In Registry Editor go to left hand panel, and find HKey_Classes_Root / Directory / Shell

*Right click on Shell folder option and add any new key with descriptive name and Press Enter.

* Now Right click on that key and give the full path of that program you are interested to add in start button. For example if you want to add MS excel, then full path may be C:\program file\msoffice\msexcel.EXE.

* Now close all open programs and check the changes in your computer Start button.

Change Font size of a webpage

Sometimes u might be having problem with the font size or color of a webpage and wished u could change it then here is how u can do it.Just follow these:

* Select the Tools option in your Explorer window and go to the Internet options.

* Go to the General option and then click on Accessibility button on right lower of the dialog box.

* Now change the status of checkbox marked "Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages" and next Ignore Colors specified on Web pages", end with Ok.

* To change the font size, select to View option from the top menu and go to Text size option to change it.

Wasn't tat so simple???

Play With ur Favourites

Well!!! A cool tip to move your favorites list, because there is no any option to copy it. But using a method you can create a printable HTML document.

To create this HTML list, just follow these:

* Open Internet Explorer.

* Go to File option ==> Import and Export ==> Click here then Next.

Here you can select what to import and export,

* Select Export Favorites option then click Next button.

Next you will get a option of which folder you want to export. You can select the specific folder then

* Select "Export to a File or Address" option and give it a name and location.

* Click Next and Finish it. Now you have one html file and you can move it any where with you.

Login with multiple ID's at a time in yahoo messenger

Now you can login with many id's in yahoo using regedit!!!

Just follow the steps:

Go to Start ==> Run ==>> Type regedit,then hit senter
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Yahoo -> pager -> Test
On the right pane ==>> right-click and choose new Dword value .
Rename it as Plural.
Double click and assign a decimal value of 1.
Now close registry and restart yahoo messenger.
For signing in with new id open another messenger .

Add a folder to "SENDTO" menu

Many of the times we might be using a folder frequently and needs the files to be transferrred to it. Then what do u do???

No no need to access the folder and carry out the traditional COPY & PASTE !!!
Just add it to "SEND TO" !!!

Do as follows :
** Open any FOLDER.
** Then, TOOLS >> Folder Options** Click view TAB.
** In LIST of Advance Settings, click Show hidden files and folders !
** Now, go to C:\Documents and Settings
** Here, double click and open your desired folder !
** Now, open SendTo folder.
** Here copy and paste the shortcut of your favorite folder.That's Done !!!

Now, to tranfer files to your favorite folder :
** Right Click the file
** Then, Send To
** Click the folder name !
